We follow on from our previous post on iFLY Downunder 4-way Vertical Formation Skydiving (VFS) team, “FOCUS”.
FOCUS has recently returned from Chicago where they competed as the Australian representative team at the World Parachuting Championships 2016. We are happy to say that they have done Australia proud by scoring the highest ever result at world level for Australia in VFS.
Off to a shaky start and losing a few points in the first rounds, FOCUS showed true courage and professional skill to claw back into the competition and end up taking 5th place, just 1 point behind 4th in a tightly fought competition between Russia, Belgium and Norway to be the “best of the rest”.
The skill shown by the top three teams USA, France and Canada was a leap ahead as they became the untouchables half way through the competition.
Not to detract from the effort of our Aussie team FOCUS though, who not only recorded a fantastic result, but also scored a massive 24pts in one of the rounds, setting a new official Australian and Oceanic competition record.
After a 2 year lead up and intense training in both the tunnel and the sky, the boys from FOCUS are happy with their performance at their first World Championship and will be taking a short break before getting back into it again to prepare for the next World Championships in 2 years time.
FOCUS team member Kieren James says “It was an amazing experience. We really managed to surprise a few people and firmly put Australia in the running. Yeah we’re taking a short time-out now, but we’ll be training hard again soon to get on that podium at the next world meet, as we know it’s within our reach”.
We share the passion and excitement of team FOCUS as they continue to push harder towards their goal and look forward to seeing them train more and smash through their goals before the 2018 World Championships, which incidentally may even be held right here in Australia (pending a successful bid to host)!
Well done FOCUS
