The 2018 Australian Open Indoor Skydiving Championships is again on Friday 24th & Saturday 25th August 2018!
Registration has just opened today for competitors to enter their teams or for individual competitors to enter into a freestyle category.
Bigger and better than ever before, the 2018 Australian Open Indoor Skydiving Championships will run over two massive days and due to competitor demand will include more categories, more competition, more people and even more fun! Flyers of all levels are welcome to take part or come along to watch all the action!
The Open will be hosted by our flagship facility, iFLY Downunder (Sydney West) and the biggest indoor skydiving tunnel in the Southern Hemisphere!
The Australian Open Indoor Skydiving Championships are free for the public to attend and previous years has seen large crowds pack-out the tunnels. It is a spectacular sight to see some of the dynamic routines and the coordination of the formation skydiving.
The visual appeal of the sport, plus the challenging progression has ensured iFLY Indoor Skydiving popularity across the country! Wind tunnels have expanded rapidly with locations now open in Penrith, Perth and the Gold Coast with more venues around the country set to open soon.
Indoor skydiving was initially developed to allow experienced skydivers to train, whatever the weather. These days indoor skydiving has soared in popularity around the world and become an adventure sport in its own right.
Indoor skydiving has fast become the most popular choice amongst kids and parents looking for an alternative to the typical sport or hobby, and ISA Group is impressed at how many kids have taken it up as a competitive outlet. The 2017 championships saw 11 kids entered into the Junior Freestyle event, with 2 of the competitors later that year competing internationally in Poland and Seattle.
The 2018 Australian Open Indoor Skydiving Championships will be held at iFLY Downunder located at 123 Mulgoa Road, Penrith. Further information and registrations will be available at www.ifly.com.au/2018australianopen

Check out rugby league team, Gold Coast Titans, kick it around at iFLY Gold Coast as part of their teams day out!
Hayden Knowles (Head of Performance for the Gold Coast Titans) is always looking for ways to motivate his team and get them working together on and off the field. So when one of the players suggested sending the team to iFLY for some flying lessons it seemed like the perfect opportunity to have a bit of fun after a morning of training. The best way to motivate your team is giving them a unique experience, and there is nothing more memorable than sending the team ‘FLYING’!
“One of our players recommended this place [iFLY Indoor Skydiving] at the start of the year. My thoughts were let’s get some morale happening; the boys have worked very hard this morning.” – Hayden
Prop and lock forward Titan’s player, Keegan Hipgrave, is at home on a surfboard as he is on the football field and now he is proud to add floating on air to that list. He was excited to report that the boys got a lot out of the experience!
You could instantly see the smile on the clubs funny-man, Konrad Hurrell, who has an infectious sense of humour. The jokes weren’t lost on the staff at our centre, who couldn’t get enough of this high spirits! He admitted he was a little hesitant jumping in at first but soon fell in love with the experience!
“The first time I did it was a bit scared of heights, I finally got to do it, and I enjoyed it. I’ll be back again, and I’ll be bringing the whole family!” – Konrad
We’re finding that indoor skydiving is becoming more and more popular amongst sports teams as an excellent way for players to bond outside of the field.
Hayden was so impressed by the visit that he just had to say a couple of words, check out the video of their flight below.

Meet our 3 Frequent iFLYER Diamond Award 2017 winners!
James Dehombre, Sarah Yates & Melissa Lisle have all shown total dedication, passion, and have proven themselves to be a driving force to the growing sport of indoor skydiving in their respective tunnels!
Melissa Lisle started flying in January 2017 and also won the Frequent iFLYER of the Year award 2017!
“I thought it was quite fun but wasn’t totally taken with it initially. It wasn’t until I started coming to iFLY regularly and learning different styles of flying that I fell in love.” -Melissa
For Melissa indoor skydiving was the ultimate opportunity to learn and master new skills while competing in a sport that the whole family could learn, literally, in the same class.
Before flying in an indoor skydiving wind tunnel, Melissa had no desire to skydive and was very afraid even to try a tandem skydiving. Now after getting involved in the sport and after completing her AFF (Accelerated Freefall Skydiving Course) you can find her at the drop zone (skydiving centre) at least once a week. It’s always exciting to see someone take what they’ve learnt from the tunnel into the sky!
13-year-old, indoor skydiving athlete, Sarah Yatesis our second diamond award winner representing her tunnel iFLY Gold Coast!
All it took was an iFLY Fast Track course (10 flights) before Sarah was hooked and had to join the Junior iFLYER club.
August 2016 saw Sarah competing in the Australian National Indoor Skydiving Championships at iFLY Downunder (Sydney West), where she came 4th in the Junior Freestyle competition after only six months of training! At the same competition, Sarah teamed up with Amy Watson, an 11-year-old junior indoor skydiving champion from Sydney, with the pair competing together in Two Way VFS (Vertical Formation Skydiving). The girls had loads of fun flying together and took out the trophy for “People’s Choice Award”.
In December 2016, Sarah went to compete in the Battle of the Blades competition in Seattle USA, where she also placed 4th in the Junior Freestyle. She teamed up with a Seattle local flyer, Huntar McKim, and competed again in the Two Way VFS against adults, again coming in 4th – a fantastic achievement for someone still so new to the sport!
Sarah has quite an inspiring story, suffering from a medical condition known as CRMO (Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis) which involves painful inflammation in the bones and can limit her from certain activities. Indoor skydiving has been a fantastic exercise program and sport for her as it is gentle on her joints. Sarah said she loves flying because it gives her a sense of freedom.
James Dehombre is proud to represent the diamond award for the iFLY Downunder (Sydney West) tunnel.
He has always loved to live life on the adventurous side or just anything out of the ordinary. James has gone; shark cage diving with Great Whites, parasailing, jet packing, kayaking, snorkelling & segways – anything to bring him out of his comfort zone.
James like most of our Junior champions began in our Junior iFLYER club and was quick to take up the sport professionally.
“I competed in The Kids Global competition and came 13th in the world for my solo freestyle, 3rd in the world for FS with my teammate and last year I won a silver medal and bronze medal in last years competition.” – James
Aside from serious competing James loves flying with friends from the Junior iFLYER club as well as the adults and instructors, the mix of different flying levels allows him to train at a higher level.
James main aim is to have fun. Eventually, with all of the skills he has learnt in the tunnel, he ultimately wants to take it skydiving.
“I love the feeling of freedom in the tunnel. It’s something you can’t describe. One of the things I really enjoy is learning a new move. It takes fun, dedication and motivation, and the speed [at which you move in] dynamic flying is amazing.” – James
“As a family, we do a lot of fun things together, and this is one sport that we are all hooked on. It’s great as we can either fly individually or fly our family routine. We all train on the same night.” – James
iFLY Indoor Skydiving is over the moon to have such passionate athletes as part of our community. We hope to see all three of our winners continue to progress in their flyers and achieve all of their goals in the coming year.
The Frequent iFLYER programme and its Facebook page is your gateway to this fantastic community! We have weekly events at all three of our tunnels where you can progress your skills, meet fellow passionate flyers and get in on the fun of being part of such a dynamic sport!
“I started flying in January 2017 because my husband was keen to give it a go. I thought it was quite fun but wasn’t totally taken with it initially. It wasn’t until I started coming to iFLY regularly and learning different styles of flying that I fell in love.
I really enjoyed the challenge of learning and mastering new skills. It’s a lot harder than it looks, that’s for sure! I think another aspect that was really appealing was the fact that our whole family was able to learn how to fly together. There aren’t many activities where the entire family can all learn at the same time in the same class. Now we have a whole family of flying addicts!
I think in a lot of ways by coming to iFLY my life has gone in an entirely different trajectory! Before flying in the tunnel, I had no desire ever to skydive and was very afraid even to try a tandem skydiving. However now after flying in the tunnel for a year, I felt like it was something I needed to do and have now completed my AFF and can be found at the drop zone at least once a week. I’m excited to be able to take what I’ve learnt in the tunnel into the sky. Flying in the tunnel gave me the confidence to get into the sky.
I’d also have to mention all the amazing people that I’ve met through the tunnel. I didn’t know they would be such a fantastic community of people that I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know. Such an unexpected bonus!
In the future, I would like to learn mainly freestyle flying and be able to compete in the tunnel and possibly in the sky too! I come from a background in pole dancing, so the freestyle side flying really appeals to me.
I’m so honoured to have received this amazing award, and as I mentioned I like to think they represent the amount of fun that I have had!” – Melissa
From the very successful Superhero Training days, the iFLY Perth Family wanted to change up the script and provide the ultimate introduction to indoor skydiving; and trust us the day was far from regular.
Capping sessions at 12 participants per event allowed young flyers to dive right into the deep end and become ‘straight fire belly shredders’ (the equivalent to little grommets in Surfing) by the end of the day. The squad was eager for some key progression, and instructors set some high flying GOALS to be achieved by the end of the session.
Starting out with belly flying training on rollers, coached by professional indoor skydivers and inspired by demonstrations from our very own advanced junior iFLYERS, Oxanna and Hannah, you could tell there was a lot of energy in the air.
It was vibin’ and an action-packed day! The kids definitely gave it all they had, proving they were the masters of the sky. The little flyers learnt learned to gracefully move left, right, up and down without assistance!
If you missed our ‘Join the Sport’ kids days at iFLY Perth, don’t distress, you can learn more about our Junior iFLYER Club (6-16) and how your kids could potentially be the next indoor skydiving world champions! They will learn to FLY like their favourite superheroes, plus, as their skills develop, they can share the air with friends and perform routines together for double the fun!
Each Junior iFLYER Session includes:
Safety briefing and training by our experienced instructors
The Frequent iFLYER Programme, since it’s creation in January 2017 as a way to reward our most loyal flyers and to foster fellowship in the Australian indoor skydiving community, has hit some major milestones and achievements… and we couldn’t be prouder! Some interacting facts:
Giving away over 10+ tunnels in tunnel time
Over 343 guest passes to come and fly with us
Hosting 3 tunnel parties for our Platinum members
Over 7,500 minutes in tunnel time given away to members
Sponsoring 7 major skydiving events!
And last but not least of all is now reaching over 3,000 members! The support of our great community is what has made it all happen, so we are celebrating with a massive sale to reward all the great indoor and outdoor skydivers that have helped make this possible! Our sale will let experienced indoor/outdoor skydivers purchase tunnel time at $909 per hour valid at all 3 of our Australian tunnels!* This kind of sale is expected to sell out within hours so we encourage everyone looking to get in on the action to be waiting and ready at their computer screens for when the sale begins!
